I established Thatchcraft Limited in 2002 and have been a Master Thatcher for 39 years. I am a member of both the National Society of Master Thatchers (NSMT) and the Wiltshire Master Thatchers Association.

Whilst at school, I helped the local thatcher in my home village of Codford  in Wiltshire during the school holidays and it became apparent that thatching was what I wanted to do as a job, especially as I have artistic flair, an interest in natural crafts and like working with natural materials.

After leaving school, I started a 5-year apprenticeship in Cornwall whilst also attending a 2-year thatching course at Knuston Hall in Northamptonshire which was sponsored by the Council of Small Industries in Rural Areas (England) (COSIRA).

After completing my apprenticeship, I continued to develop my knowledge of thatching working alongside Master Thatchers in Oxfordshire, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. This gave me a wealth of experience which allowed me to further develop my knowledge and skills and gave me a good basis for setting up my own business.

I am experienced in working with both Combed Wheat Straw and Water Reed and work throughout Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire.

I am the proud father of 2 grown up daughters and Molly, my Jack Russell terrier is often seen up on the scaffolding!

Over the years my meticulous eye for detail and high standard of work has ensured me an excellent reputation as a Master Thatcher. I am only now re-thatching properties that I thatched some 27+ years ago; that can wholly be attributed to good workmanship and using best quality locally-sourced materials.

Some notable projects include the thatched tree house at Highgrove, the thatched roofs on the BBC’s drama ‘Larkrise to Candleford’ to name a couple. I have also undertaken work for English Heritage.
